I help government and businesses achieve waste minimisation goals for construction materials.
Claude Dewerse
Circular Economy Advisor
Waste has always been a pet hate of mine.
So when, a number of years ago, we took our young kids to spend an extended time with family in the Netherlands, I took the opportunity to learn more about climate change, sustainability, and the Circular Economy in particular, completing several courses from the Delft University of Technology and getting involved in the Dutch circular economy scene.
Since returning to New Zealand at the end of 2019 I have been combining my experience as a Civil Engineer / Project Manager with a circular economic approach to create positive environmental and social outcomes in local government initiatives. I have been pioneering innovative waste minimisation practices, managed house removal and material reuse programmes for large infrastructure and housing projects in Auckland such as the Repurposing Tāmaki Houses Project, Eastern Busway project and the Auckland Council Flood Recovery Project.
Key to the success of this work is engaging with and supporting the growth of the downstream infrastructure to be able to accept secondary materials. Building relationships with downstream commercial and social organisations and helping to grow the network of outlets for different materials is one of the highlights of my work.
